Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users using these treatments must be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a intense return of cravings.

"It was like a switch flipping and you become starving," recalled a patient.

The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
